    What is Athlete's Foot?

Athlete's foot - medically known as tinea pedis - is a fungal skin infection that typically follows a "moccasin" distribution, surrounding the borders of the feet and infecting primarily between the toes. It causes itchy, peeling skin, splits between the toes, and sometimes tiny fluid-filled blisters.

It is highly contagious, often picked up on wet floors in showers, swimming pools and changing rooms, where the fungus thrives in warm, damp, dark conditions. Around 1 in 7 adults are affected.

    How to Identify Athlete's Foot

    • Itchy, peeling or flaking skin, particularly between the toes
    • Splits or cracks in the skin between the toes
    • Tiny fluid-filled blisters (vesicular eruptions)
    • Redness and soreness, especially if a bacterial infection sets in
    • A burning or stinging sensation
    • Symptoms that worsen with sweaty or enclosed footwear

    Can Spread to the Nails

Left untreated, athlete's foot commonly spreads to the toenails, causing a fungal nail infection that is significantly harder to clear. Treating the skin infection promptly helps protect the nails too.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Is athlete's foot contagious?

Yes. It spreads easily through direct contact and on wet surfaces such as shower floors and pool sides. Avoid sharing towels and wear sandals in communal wet areas.

Why does it keep coming back?

Athlete's foot often recurs when the source of reinfection - damp shoes, old towels, or bath mats - is not addressed alongside treatment. We advise on this as part of your appointment.

When should I see a podiatrist instead of using pharmacy creams?

If over-the-counter treatments have not cleared the infection, if it keeps returning, or if you have diabetes or a compromised immune system, professional assessment is recommended.

    How much does it cost?

Athlete's foot assessment and treatment is included in our standard podiatry appointment, from £100.
