What are Flat Feet?
Flat feet (pes planus) describes a condition where the medial longitudinal arch of the foot is reduced or absent, causing the sole to make full or near-full contact with the ground. This altered foot position typically results in over-pronation | an inward rolling of the foot during walking and running.
While many people with flat feet experience no problems, over-pronation transmits abnormal rotational forces up through the ankle, shin, knee and hip | often causing pain in multiple areas simultaneously. Identifying and correcting this biomechanical chain is central to our approach at Grays Foot Clinic.
Associated Symptoms & Conditions
- Aching or fatigue in the feet, especially after prolonged standing
- Heel pain (plantar fasciitis | a very common secondary condition)
- Shin splints and anterior tibial pain
- Knee pain, particularly on the medial (inner) side
- Hip pain and lower back pain
- Bunions (Hallux Valgus) | accelerated by over-pronation
- Ankle instability or recurrent ankle sprains
Our Treatment Approach
At Grays Foot Clinic, we have been treating flat feet and over-pronation with custom orthotics since 1986. Our plaster-of-Paris casting technique captures the foot in its neutral position | the gold standard for accurate orthotic fabrication.
Biomechanical Assessment
A comprehensive gait analysis, including assessment of joint range of motion and muscle strength, to quantify the degree and pattern of your pronation.
Plaster-of-Paris Casting
Your foot is cast in its anatomically correct neutral position to ensure the orthotic controls motion accurately rather than simply providing cushioning.
Hand-Made Custom Orthotics
Each pair of orthotics is individually fabricated using your cast, with materials and corrections prescribed specifically for your needs.
Follow-Up & Adjustment
Included fitting appointment with a 6-month warranty on all orthotics. Adjustments made as needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do flat feet always cause problems?
Not necessarily. Many people have flat feet and never experience pain. However, if your flat feet are causing symptoms anywhere in the lower limb, a biomechanical assessment is worthwhile.
Are custom orthotics better than off-the-shelf insoles for flat feet?
Custom orthotics are significantly more effective for biomechanical problems. Off-the-shelf insoles are generic and cannot replicate the neutral position casting that underpins a truly corrective orthotic.
Can children have flat feet treated?
Yes. In children, early intervention with orthotics can support normal arch development. Our podiatrists can assess children and advise on whether treatment is appropriate.
